Dandanes pa ima \u017ee vsak tretji prebivalec razvitih de\u017eel zama\u0161\u010dena jetra zaradi preve\u010d u\u017eitega sladkorja, je razkril dr. Robert H. Lustig v svoji uspe\u0161nici Mastna la\u017e (2014). Bolezen imenujejo NASH. V ZDA je bila poraba sladkorja \u017ee leta 1980 nad priporo\u010deno ravnjo, do leta 2012 pa se je \u0161e ve\u010d kot potrojila. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Namizni sladkor je sestavljen iz dveh enostavnih sladkorjev: glukoze, ki jo celice uporabljajo kot glavni energent ter fruktoze, ki jo mora telo v jetrih spremeniti v glukozo. Ker je fruktoza kar petkrat bolj reaktivna kot glukoza, se ob preveliki koli\u010dini u\u017eitega sladkorja jetra po\u0161kodujejo, podobno kot pri alkoholikih. Vse, kar je sladko, vsebuje fruktozo. V ZDA so glavni vir preve\u010d u\u017eite fruktoze sladkane industrijske pija\u010de.
