Proizvaja ga \u017eleza \u010de\u0161arika zlasti pono\u010di v temi, \u017eal pa ga v starosti zaradi kalcifikacije proizvaja le \u0161e zanemarljivo malo. Takrat spanje lahko prikli\u010demo z u\u017eivanjem melatonina, Dr. R. Reiter, pionir raziskovanja u\u010dinkov melatonina, ugotavlja, da nekaterim pomaga k priklicu spanja \u017ee odmerek 0,1 mg. Po stali\u0161\u010du Evropske komisije za varno hrano EFSA odmerek 1,0 mg melatonina u\u010dinkovito prikli\u010de spanje. V Sloveniji so v prosti prodaji dovoljeni odmerki do 0,44 mg. \u010ce za spanje potrebujemo ve\u010dji odmerek, se posvetujmo z zdravnikom. Tudi za svetovanje pri prehrani bolnika je pristojen le zdravnik.<\/p>\n<p>Veliko ljudi mu\u010di nespe\u010dnost. Zanje je zna\u010dilno, da se mnogo pogosteje po\u0161kodujejo in pogosteje zbolevajo. Melatonin ni le \u00bbhormon spanja\u00ab, pa\u010d pa neposredno spodbuja tudi delovanje imunskega sistema. \u017de leta 1988 je raziskovalna ekipa pod vodstvom G.J. Kar 2\/3 vseh levkocitov<br \/>\nso fagociti, ki obi\u010dajno tudi prvi prihitijo na kraj oku\u017ebe. Leta 1994 so v laboratorijskem poskusu v Chicagu ugotovili, da se je v raztopini, v kateri je bilo toliko melatonina, kot ga je v na\u0161i krvi pozno pono\u010di, obrambna<br \/>\nmo\u010d fagocitov pove\u010dala za 73%.<\/p>\n<p>Znano je, da je organizem v \u010dasu stresa manj odporen proti oku\u017ebam. Prav v takih okoli\u0161\u010dinah je melatonin naju\u010dinkovitej\u0161i. Ko so mi\u0161i v stresnem polo\u017eaju<br \/>\nmo\u010dno oku\u017eili z virusi, jih je brez dodatka melatonina pre\u017eivelo le 6%, med tistimi, ki so dobivale dodatek melatonina, pa jih je pre\u017eivelo 82%.
